1. Wash Up Dishes, Pots And Pans As You Cook

Start with a sink full of hot soapy water, and then use the time while you are waiting while cooking, like when simmering or baking, to clean up what you can.
It is amazing how doing this simple kitchen cleaning tip can cut down on the clean up after the meal.
You should also let the additional pots and pans you could not clean up before dinner soak while you are enjoying your meal so they are even easier to clean up afterwards.

2. Follow An After-Meal Routine Each Time You Eat A Meal In Your Home

Basically this kitchen cleaning tip is to make sure that after every meal you do a mini-cleanup of the kitchen to get it ready for the next time you will need to make food in it again.
This routine can be something similar to this:
Put away all uneaten food, such as leftovers, in plastic containers, or otherwise store
Put all dishes in the dishwasher or hand wash them if necessary
Run the dishwasher as soon as it becomes full
Wash all pots and pans and other items used in preparing or eating the meal
Go ahead and dry these immediately hand washed dishes and pots and put them away, or if you like for things to drip dry come back later and put them away so that you have counter space available again the next time you need to use the kitchen
Quickly wipe down the counters, kitchen table, and stove top of any big crumbs or spills
Wipe down your sink of any grease or grime it got while washing dishes and other utensils
I generally just use the sprayer to rinse it off and run the garbage disposal briefly.
Some people like to dry their sink out with a cloth, but I think that is more a matter of personal preference.

3. Empty The Dishwasher Quickly After It Is Finished

Nothing causes a back up of dirty dishes piling up in your sink faster than a dishwasher full of clean dishes that still need to be put away.
This is a great chore for kids to do, or you can do it quickly while you are waiting for other things in the kitchen, like water to boil or something to finish in the microwave.

4. Empty Kitchen Trash

Of all the trash in the house the kitchen trash is most likely to attract bugs or other pests, and also the most likely to create unpleasant odors.
Therefore, as part of your daily routine make it a habit to take out the kitchen trash.

5. Sweep The Kitchen Floor

The more small children you have (or older messy eaters) the more important this task becomes.
It is amazing to me how messy my children are sometimes, especially when they are young, and how much stuff I can sweep off the floor every single day.
Again, this is a great task to assign to children.
We gave my middle son a dust pan and little hand-held broom and he sweeps up pretty well (he started when he was about three).

6. Change Your Kitchen Towels Daily, If Not More Often

With all this advice to wipe up spills as they happen, and clean your kitchen throughout the day as you eat various meals, you can go through a lot of kitchen towels.
At a minimum change your kitchen towels daily, but I do it more frequently because they get wet and soggy, and I like to use a clean cloth for each spill I wipe up, and a new one to dry dishes, and a new one to wipe faces and/or hands, etc.
I do this so I do not cross-contaminate by using the same kitchen towel multiple times.

Modular kitchen buying guide : SLEEK The kitchen specialist

Instagram
As far as the question of kitchen décor is concerned, a lot of people seem to have taken a fancy to the modular kitchen of late. And why shouldn't they? Designed sleekly to suit individual taste and preference as well as the available space in any home, the modular kitchen set has now become a ubiquitous feature. Incase you too wish to buy a modular kitchen system for your self and are feeling muddled about how to go about it, here's some useful modular kitchen buying tips and information.

Modular kitchen systems consist of standardized units pre-fabricated in a huge array of materials, available in varied hues and with a neat finishing. They come in different price ranges and thus, very easily fit into the budget of people wanting a modular kitchen system. A regular modular kitchen system will generally consist of standardized units for the floor and wall. The units are usually deep to house electrical appliances and kitchen utensils of varied shapes and sizes.

If your kitchen is completely bare i.e. without kitchen counters, you will need a box type kitchen. A box type modular kitchen is fully modular, from the kitchen counters to the cabinets and the shutters to the pullouts. On the other hand, if your builder has already provided you with granite kitchen counters or even a kaddapa (black limestone) framework, you can have a modular kitchen worked into it. However, this way only your cabinet shutters, shelves and pullouts will be modular. But you will be saving out on the overall cost of modular framework but look will not be as good as full modular kitchen.

Certain modular kitchen brands have fittings, cabinet shutters, drawers etc. available in only certain fixed sizes but SLEEK kitchens can customize it. This works fine if you require a box type kitchen because the counter height can then vary. But if your kitchen has the groundwork in place, you will need to make sure that the shutter heights suit the height of your kitchen counters. For instance, if your counter height is 32 inches, you will need a shutter height of about 30 inches keeping in mind a 1-inch frame all around. However, if you can't find shutters to fit your kitchen, there are certain modular kitchen dealers who make to order as well.

KITCHEN CABINETS AND DRAWERS
Let the store owners also sometimes guide you on buying the right modular kitchen cabinet. You will discover that buying a modular kitchen cabinet system is all fun because each set may be made out of a different kind of material. As such, you can choose from natural or lacquered wood, combinations of wood and laminate, laminate and granite, or even aluminum and marble. If you have any ingenious material at hand, then feel free to explore your creativity to get one custom built for yourself.

Make sure that the material you select for cabinets is water resistant. Marine ply is a good cabinet material because of it's greater resistance to water.
Solid wood cabinets need a lot of care and frequent polishing to retain the lustre. Also, constant contact with water may cause the wood to rot.
You should also ensure that the materials used have been treated for termites.

Mild steel kitchen cabinets are prone to rusting if not powder coated. Try and avoid using mild steel above or near the stove area. The cabinets will get very heated, making it difficult to open them.

You invest in good quality shutter hinges and drawer channels so that they do not get spoilt in monsoons.
For drawers that shut on the lightest touch, get hydraulic hinges, which have a smooth mechanism. Smooves (a type of hinge) have a similar mechanism but are of a higher quality. They are slightly more expensive but worth every penny.
You could also opt for 90 degree hinges for regular cabinets. 165 degree hinges are ideal for corner cabinets under L-shaped platforms. They make cabinets with folding doors easier to open and help easier access.
Blumotion channels close at feather touch but never bang shut. So you won't have to worry about your kids closing the drawers roughly.

Telescopic channels too are very useful. They allow the drawer to open fully so you don't have to struggle when you need that pickle jar at the back of the cabinet.

Avoid bottom-mounted channels, as the drawers with such channels do not open fully. At least 4 to 6 inches of the drawer remains inside.

Note: Channels works on cycles so you need to change it or call for service after a period of time.

Termites - Typical First Strikes by Housekeeping and Maintenance

When a home is being built, most builders simply sweep the wood debris out one of these door openings and then cover the debris with concrete, making a perfect termite terrarium where it is dark, damp
and never freezes.

Before they put in the porch or step or slab, remove all of this debris or, better yet,
treat it all with sodium borate or borax or incorporate food-grade DE in these areas.

1. Vacuum up all swarmers and/or place containers of water near the swarm area. Check all wood with a
moisture meter. Push lollipops into the ground (stick first) wherever you find termite activity. The
lollipops will attract ants that will attack and eat the termites.
2. Inject and soak all the damp and/or infested and/or exposed (unfinished) wood with ½ c. Safe Solutions
Enzyme Cleaner with Peppermint and 1½ c. borax in 1 gal. hot water at least 3 times to the point of
runoff.
3. Remove all earth/wood contacts, roots and foam board insulation. Termites hate sand.
4. Install and properly maintain dehumidifiers, vents, fans, eaves and downspouts.
5. Prebait with rolled cardboard moistened with an ice cube (with no chlorine) or some cold seltzer water
thatstill has its “fizz” and ½% or less borax or sodium borate, or moistened with colloidal copper and
Flagyl®
.
6. Not Nice to Termites®
(but nice to people, homes and pets) bait monitoring stations and termite
predator mite stations may be obtained from Get Set, Inc. The monitoring stations should be placed
near water sources like downspouts, leaking outdoor faucets and/or air conditioners or swamp coolers or
under rotting logs, planters, shingles, rocks and/or stones. Add as many as you need until you get hits.
Replace the hit ones with active stations (and transfer the termites). Don’t disturb active stations once
feeding begins. Remember, termites forage in the top 4” of soil in the spring. In the summer they
go deeper (especially in the South) and may avoid your traps!
7. Termite workers have been given various cellulose products to eat in laboratory and field situations. We
have observed they prefer to eat cardboard with brown rot and CO2
, white paper towels, processed
cellulose, plywood, pine, citrus wood, sawdust, wood chips, untreated foam, etc. One of the least
preferred soft wood for native species is douglas fir - they will eat oak first.
8. Termite baits can be made to attract termites by applying CO2
and/or brown rot to them. A simple way to
get the (brown rot) attractant is to put wet paper towels over a termite colony and collect the fecal
droppings; then dilute in acetone and spray the mix on cardboard. Be sure to use the proper protection
for the acetone. Flagyl 250 ml can be diluted and added to the bait station or sprayed directly on
infested wood or cardoard (or dust a live mud tube with the powder). 1% sodium borate or borax or ¼%
urea, ¼% methylene blue or ½% red food dye can be added to the baits.
9. Treat crawlspace spaces and cracks with diluted urea, borax or salt. Termites will avoid eugenol, myrrh
resins, clove oil, cinnamon oil, DE, urea, or salt treated soil, wood, cardboard, etc. You can also use
Safe Solutions, Inc. food-grade diatomaceous earth as a barrier through which termites will not dig or
inject it into galleries.
10. Before the vapor barrier is put down, apply a generous amount of food grade diatomaceous earth (DE)
to the bare soil, especially around the footing and expansion cracks. Once the foundation is poured and
set, apply more food grade DE along the outside perimeter, especially under the porches and steps.
11. If you still have visible termite activity, read the entire chapter.
12. Contact a graduate of the Institute of Pest Management, Inc.
13. It is interesting that our “government” tends to “register” poisons that do not work and to attack and/or
discredit GRAS or non-toxic products that actually control pests.
Alternative Indian Termite Controls
1. Mixtures of lime and sulphur forked into the soil discourages termite attack.
2. Wood ash heaped around the base of the trunk has been recorded to prevent termite infestation of
coffee bushes and date palms.
3. Cattle urine diluted at a rate of 1:6 with water can be poured down termite holes. This treatment should
be repeated for a few days since the termites tried to open up.4. Farmers mix red coloured clay with water to form a sticky paste. This paste is coated on the trunk and
large twigs at the onset of monsoon when termite damage is severe. Fresh and young grafts are coated
with cattle dung to protect them from termites. Combined use of the two methods effectively
prevents infestations in small orchards.

Boron - One of the most important functions boron serves is to keep the world green. All plants – from
fields of cotton to groves of Douglas fir – depend on trace amounts of boron to thrive. Plants get the boron they
need from the land and water supply; it’s widely distributed throughout the environment as minerals called
borates. People get the boron they need from plants; it’s part of a healthy diet.
Although boron is essential for plants, and nutritionally important for humans – it also works to control insects
and fungi. Boron in the form of sodium borate will also kill bacteria and plants at higher levels.
In treated wood, borates are:
• colorless and odorless so they maintain the physical appearance of wood products,
• non-volatile and robust so they don’t evaporate or degrade during service,
• non-corrosive so many of the nails and metal fasteners used with untreated wood can also be used
with borate treated wood,
• and will repel or kill cockroa\hes and other pests.
Borates work by interfering with the basic metabolic processes in wood destroying organisms, similar to their
mode of action in controlling other insects such as ants and silverfish. Because the mode of action is
fundamental, borate efficacy is broad spectrum, and target organisms do not develop resistance as they can
with conventional pesticides. Boron’s functionality is based on its ability to form complexes with various sugar
alcohol compounds such as vitamins and co-enzymes. Reaction of borates with co-enzymes containing
these molecules has been found to diminish the ability of organisms to process food and energy, causing the
target organisms to “starve” and eventually die. The best way to expose target organisms to borates is to
treat their food source or immediate environment.
When timber is exposed to moisture, decay fungi can infest and destroy wood. Using borate preservatives
puts the wood destroying organism in constant and direct contact with the borates. As with insects, the borates
in the treated wood interfere with the metabolic processes of decay fungi.
The levels used in pest applications pose no risk to people or pets. The fact is, people consume between
one to three milligrams of borates as part of a healthy plant-based diet. Our bodies handle borates as they
do any nutrient; by using what they need and excreting the rest. Borates do not bioaccumulate in humans
or other mammals, and they are not absorbed through intact skin. Even among workers with higher than
normal exposure to borates, studies show no negative health impacts over time. Trees need boron to
grow.

What are the different types of range hood and kitchen hood?

What are the different types of range hood and kitchen hood?

http://www.sleekworld.com/

If you have spent hours cleaning grime from your kitchen utensils or cabinets, you know why you want a kitchen hood. It is basically an electric fan inside a metal casing, which has the capability of capturing smoke, steam, grease, odors and gases. A range hood will clean up the air many times in an hour and promotes a sound heath of the family members. It is available in many dimensions discovering 1 that would fit inside your kitchen is not a difficult job. Its installation is normally straightforward and can be maintained without much fuss. For the much more stylish people there are many eye-catching designs available in the marketplace. Nowadays, there are a lot of sorts of hoods obtainable in the marketplace, like the canopy, retractable and fixed variants.

Kitchen hood can be classified in a number of methods. They can be classified on the basis of their installation process. The fixed range hood as the name suggests is fixed to the wall. It covers the whole stove region and is the most simple to install. It has really a big filter. Then there is the retractable hood, which can be pulled out and placed over the stove although cooking and the rest of the times it could be kept inside. This idea of retracting the hood is extremely neat. They are nonetheless a small much more high-priced and performance wise not that very good when compared to the other hoods. The third kind is the canopy style Kitchen hood. These used to be a frequent feature of industrial kitchens but now they have turn into quite common in houses too. They are the very best performance wise but are fairly expensive. They can be of the island or the wall mounted sort range hood. Their large size is a large dilemma for little kitchens.

Kitchen hood can be also classified on the basis in which they vent out the impure air. The main function of the kitchen hood is to treat air-borne contaminants present in the kitchen. There are methods in which the range hood works against these. There is the duct kind hood, which forces all the contaminants from the kitchen outside the developing using a vent or duct. These require to be installed near the window or anywhere else in the kitchen where a provision of a vent could be made. In kitchens where such an arrangement can not be created, the internal or re-circulation hoods can be employed with ease. These hoods use a series of charcoal filters to re-circulate fresh air inside the kitchen. Though it is much less expensive, it is also much less effective than the duct kind hood.

If you have finally decided on purchasing a kitchen hood, it is excellent news but 1 need to look at a number of aspects although finding one. The speed and type of the internal fan, noise level, lighting program, size and the Cubic feet per minute rate are just some of these simple things to take into account even though finding a range hood. There are extra features as well like the heat sensor, which clearly calls for much more income.

Microwave Oven Cleaning and Deodorizing

During the course of your kitchen cleaning, you'll want to clean the exterior of your microwave oven.

You can do this using baking soda and wate which should remove any residue without harming the finish. You may also want to wipe down the outside with vinegar after scrubbing. To thoroughly clean the inside of your microwave oven, add two tablespoons of lemon juice to a cup of water in amicrowave safe bowl. Heat the mixture and allow to boil for approximately five minutes. Wipe out the inside with a sponge.
For a quick and simple method of cleaning, wet a dishcloth and place in the center of your microwave. Turn on high and allow the cloth to heat for about 30 seconds. The steam that this creates will help loosen any hardened spills and you can use the heated cloth to wipe the inside clean. Be careful, the cloth will be really hot! If you have some difficult stains inside your microwave oven, there are two things you can try to remove them.
First, you can cover the sides of your microwave with a cream cleanser, something like VIM. Put a microwave safe container with water in it on the turntable. Microwave it and make plenty of steam. Wipe out the interior with paper towel, and be sure to rinse thoroughly. If this doesn't work, you can take a three cup glass microwavable container, fill with one cup water and one cup white vinegar. Microwave for five minutes uncoverd. Then wipe down with warm sponge.

To freshen up and deodorize your microwave, place a bowl of water in the oven and add three or four slices of lemon. Cook on high for thirty seconds. You can also try putting a little vanilla in a bowl, place it in your microwave and turn your oven on High for one minute. Repeat if this doesn't remove the smell after one try.

Plastic Container Stain Removal

If you stored a tomato based product, such as pasta, in a plastic container, chances are your Tupperware is stained. If you heated the pasta in the microwave using the same container, chances are your plasticware is stained permanantly. Washing the dishes will help, but your containers may be stained beyond repair. To avoid this, spray your bowls or containers with a no stick cooking spray before each use to keep your plastic containers from getting stained from red sauces. In addition, one should never place a tomato based product in the microwave if one is using a plastic container. Because the plastic is so pourous, the tomato gets embedded in the pores. If a container is already stained, you have to get a little creative when washing the dishes. Your first option is to fill the bowl with hot water and drop in a couple of denture tablets. Leave for a couple of hours and when you come back the stains will hopefully be removed. You can also try soaking the container in one part bleach to two parts of water. Make sure you give the bowls a thorough rinse, maybe even a run through in the microwave, before using again.

Clogged Sink

If you're not careful when washing the dishes, food particles can get caught in the drain, creating a clog.
To clear a clogged sink, pour one half cup of baking soda follwed by one cup of vinegar down the drain.
Wait one hour and then chase it with a kettle of boiling water. You can also try putting three Alka Seltzer tablets down your clogged drain, followed buy a cup of white vinegar.
Wait a few minutes and then run hot water. If the sink is clogged with grease, pour a cup of salt water and a cup of baking soda into the drain followed by a kettle of boiling water.
The grease will usually dissolve immediately and open the drain.

Homemade Remedy For Clogged Drains

If you have a clogged drain and cannot run out to the store to get a commercial drain product, try this remedy.
1) Remove all water from the sink. You may have to dip it out of the sink with a cup and place it in a bucket.
2) Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain.
3) Follow that with one cup of table salt.
4) Next, pour one half cup of white vinegar down the drain.
5) Allow the drain to set for ten minutes than flush it with two quarts of boiling water.

Coffee Maker Cleaning

Drip type coffee makers should be made a party of your regular kitchen cleaning routine (at least once a month). Dried coffee oils can ruin the taste of even the best blend. In addition, if you have what's considered "hard water", minerals can build up inside your coffee maker.

An alternative to commercial coffee cleaners is to run a solution of half white vinegar and half water through the coffee maker to dissolve scale. The heated solution may have to be run through the unit one or more times if buildup is heavy. Thoroughly rinse all parts of the unit.

Run plain cold water through a cycle to remove all traces. If you still have your owner's manual, check it as well for instructions specific to your model. The glass pot, filter container and other removeable components can be cleaned when you're washing the dishes.

Getting Grease Build-Up Off of a Tiled Kitchen Floor

Stuck on grease is usually a sticky goo-ish type substance that is best dealt with by using a soapy kind of cleanser- namely a degreaser along the lines of 409- and a heavy duty nylon scrubbing pad.

http://www.sleekworld.com/

A warning however:
Depending on how heavy the build-up is, it usually requires a little bit of elbow grease to get rid of it. The problem with that is you have to be careful not to ruin the finish of whatever that build-up has latched itself onto. If you're not concerned about the surface, scrub away with a heavy duty nylon pad and degreaser. If the surface is a concern, forgo the scrubbing pad. Spray the area with degreaser (testing a small patch for colorfastness first) and clean with a rag dipped in the hottest water possible. (Gloves may be a good idea here.) Wring out your rag in fresh hot water often- and change rags when necessary.
If the build up is really, really heavy, soak the area in degreaser and scrape off the build-up with a putty knife. Then use the heavy duty scrubbing pad and/or the 'hot rag' method.

After initial organization, all you need to do is maintain things the way that you have them set up. This way nothing becomes overwhelming and your cleaning should take more than 5 to 10 minutes each time.
Pre-wash items and place them directly in the dishwasher, or wash items as soon as you are done with them.
Fourth step:
Your kitchen table and counter tops are usually pretty easy to clean off. You will probably need to wipe down countertops and tables after meals to clean up and spills or crumbs that can attract bugs and bacteria. It is also important to wipe down countertops and tables used before and after food preparation. Not only will this reduce overall cleaning time, but will also help protect your family against disease.

Fifth step:
Wiping down your stove tops should be a quick daily task and a good practice to prevent food particles from becoming backed up and stuck on your stove. If possible, wipe down the stove top after cooking each meal.
Sixth step:
Depending on the style of your cabinets, you may want to take 2-3 minutes each day to wipe down your cabinets. We usually forget that the residue from cooking, things spilled, and stains left by children and pets often take a toll on your cabinets. Taking a minute or two to simply wipe down cabinets can keep your kitchen looking new and put off the need for replacing or repainting cabinets.
